Perge ancient city is located in Aksu district, 17 kilometers east of Antalya city center. The city, which is believed to have existed in the Hittite period and is known as “Parha”, was one of the most regular cities in Anatolia during the Roman period. The sculptures unearthed during the excavations in the
ancient city, which is famous for its architecture and marble sculpture, have made the Antalya Museum one of the most important sculpture museums.
The basis of the city plan of Perge is two main streets, one running in an east-west direction and the other in a north-south direction.The theater, which has a capacity of 15 thousand spectators, is quite well preserved. The elaborately decorated two-story stage building, located opposite the seating
areas, was built in the 2nd century. The artifacts found here are currently on permanent display in the Hall of the Perge Theater in the Antalya Museum.
The perfection of these sculptures reflects the unique style School of Perge sculpture in a very beautiful way. Another basic structure of the ancient city of Perge, the stadium is one of the best preserved stadiums in Turkey. Built in the 2nd century BC to the north of the theater, the stadium has a capacity of approximately 12 thousand spectators.
Other social and cultural structures that reflect the city’s greatness in ancient times include a rectangular agora, high towers, monumental fountains, baths and colonnaded streets. Perge is also important to Christianity. Saint Paul, one of the most important figures of Christianity, arrived in Perge via the Aksu River during his missionary travels. Because it is written in the Bible, the city and the stream are considered one of the sacred places of Christianity.
